As part of the FUNKE Media Group, we have decades of experience and expertise in the print business. Every day, we produce hundreds of thousands of daily newspapers, brochures and inserts in our printing centres. However, considering new media and consumer behaviour, we asked ourselves the following question in 2018: how can we make our core expertise accessible to small customers and open up the "newspaper" product to a broad market?

Smartpaper24: Environmental Awareness & Sustainability in Online Printing

Printing on paper is not yet possible without CO2 emissions and resource consumption. Nevertheless, the issue of sustainability is very important to us. In online printing, we are constantly working on environmentally friendly solutions that make both economic and ecological sense. In cooperation with ClimatePartner, we make a financial climate contribution to support environmental protection projects and actively offset our CO2 emissions.

In addition, our FUNKE Media Group printing houses (FUNKE printing centre NRW and FUNKE printing centre Lower Saxony) switched to green electricity in 2022 to further minimise their ecological footprint. The printed newspapers in offset printing are made from almost 100% recycled waste paper, which reduces the amount of paper required and conserves natural resources. We also use the efficient coldset printing process in web offset production. In contrast to the significantly more energy-intensive heatset, we do not use intermediate drying units. The sustainability strategies of our printing centres are rounded off by our energy management system, which has been certified to DIN ISO 50001 since 2015. By regularly analysing our energy balance, we ensure that we constantly keep an eye on our greenhouse gas emissions and take appropriate measures to reduce CO2 emissions. Environmentally friendly and sustainable printing is not just an economic goal for us, but a commitment to the next generation.

In digital printing, we achieve precise delivery quantities through individualised short runs and precise quantities. Because nothing is more harmful to the environment than avoidable wastage. The more print products that are thrown away unused due to excessive print runs or incorrect targeting, the worse the carbon footprint.
